To add YouTube chapters, open your video in YouTube Studio, put a timestamp list in its description, and save. Start at 00:00, include at least three chapters in ascending order, and leave at least 10 seconds for every chapter. Your channel also needs chapter access through Advanced Features.
If you already did that and the progress bar is still one solid line, use the checks below. If the chapters appear but will not respond to a tap, skip to the playback section; rewriting a valid description will not isolate that problem.

Add chapters to your own video
In YouTube Studio, select Content, open the video, and add timestamps with titles to Description. Use your video's real section boundaries. For a video longer than 3 minutes 12 seconds, this example has enough room for all four chapters:

YouTube's chapter instructions explain the required timestamp format and automatic chapter setting. If you do not have chapter access, check Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility before repeatedly editing the list.
Use chapters while watching
Chapters split a video into named sections so you can jump to the part you need. Select a chapter on a video that has them; the uploader's timestamps may also appear in its description. Watching someone else's video does not let you add chapters to their upload.
If the labels are visible but selecting one does nothing, compare the standalone watch page in another browser or device. That is a different problem from chapters being absent altogether.
First, identify which YouTube chapters problem you have

This distinction matters. A valid creator-side chapter list cannot repair a problem that only occurs inside one app, browser, or playlist view.
Fix 1: Start the first chapter at 00:00
The first timestamp tells YouTube that the list is a chapter list. Starting at 00:05, writing an introduction without a time, or placing the first chapter later in the video does not meet YouTube's published requirement.

Fix 2: Include at least three timestamps
Two timestamps are not enough. YouTube requires at least three timestamps in ascending order.
This will not qualify as a chapter list:

Fix 3: Keep every chapter at least 10 seconds long
YouTube says the minimum chapter length is 10 seconds. One segment below that minimum can stop the list from working as expected.

Check every gap and the final segment to the end of the video. A timestamp just five seconds before the video ends leaves a five-second chapter, even when every earlier gap is valid.
Fix 4: Use one clean timestamp-and-title line per chapter
YouTube asks for a list of timestamps and titles in the video description. The safest version is deliberately boring: one timestamp, one title, one line.

YouTube does not publish a complete parser specification, so claims that a particular emoji or punctuation mark always breaks chapters go beyond the evidence. A clean list simply removes unnecessary variables.
Fix 5: Check Advanced Features access
Perfect formatting is not enough if the channel cannot use chapters. YouTube tells creators without chapter access to apply for Advanced Features.
On a computer, check:

YouTube's current verification guide says creators must first complete phone verification, then either build sufficient channel history or, where offered, verify their identity with a valid ID or video.
There is no published 1,000-subscriber requirement for chapters. That number belongs to other YouTube conversations and is bad troubleshooting advice here.
If you use a Brand Account, make sure the primary owner is handling identity verification. YouTube says managers and editors cannot perform that verification on the owner's behalf.
Fix 6: Check the automatic chapters setting
Manual and automatic chapters are separate systems:
- Manual chapters come from timestamps you add to the description.
- Automatic chapters are generated by YouTube when a video is eligible.
To allow automatic chapters for a video:

→ Allow automatic chapters and key moments → SaveYouTube says the box is checked by default for new uploads, but creators can disable it for one video, in bulk, or through upload defaults. A previously changed default is easy to forget.
Manual chapters override automatic chapters. If your manual list is valid, you do not need YouTube to generate a second set. In practice, manual chapters are the more controllable option because you choose the boundaries and titles.
Automatic chapters are not guaranteed. YouTube explicitly says that not all videos are eligible and not every eligible video will receive them. Enabling the checkbox is permission, not a promise.
Fix 7: Check active strikes and video eligibility
The official chapters page says the feature is unavailable when a channel has an active strike or when the content may be inappropriate for some viewers. It also requires Advanced Features access.
Check the visible channel status and the affected video's restrictions before changing the description again. Do not jump straight to “shadowban.” That label does not diagnose whether the issue is formatting, feature access, a strike, or video eligibility.
A careful way to test this is to compare two public videos on the same channel:
- If neither video has chapters, look at channel-level access and status.
- If one works and one does not, compare their timestamp lists, automatic chapter settings, and restrictions.
Fix 8: Troubleshoot chapters that show but will not seek
This is the branch most chapter guides miss. If you can already see the chapter labels or segmented progress bar, YouTube has recognized some chapter data. Rewriting the titles is unlikely to fix a tap or click that fails only in one viewing context.
Test in this order:
- Open the video's standalone public watch page, outside a playlist.
- Try the same chapter in a desktop browser and the mobile app.
- Try a private browser window or a signed-out session.
- If the problem occurs only in one app, update and restart that app.
- If it occurs across environments, use YouTube Studio's Send feedback option and include the video URL and affected device.
These steps are diagnostic, not proof of a platform-wide bug. Viewer reports can show that the symptom exists, but only YouTube can confirm a general playback defect and its cause.
How long should you wait after editing chapters?
YouTube does not publish a guaranteed “chapters will appear within X minutes” promise on its chapters help page. Save the description, allow the video page to update, then check the standalone public watch page in a separate session.
If the valid list is still missing, move to Feature eligibility and video status instead of repeatedly waiting an arbitrary 24-hour period. Waiting does not correct an eight-second chapter or unlock Advanced Features.
